‘Leave My Bits Alone’ – Press Release

Alesha Dixon has confirmed her first TV deal since winning Strictly Come Dancing โ€“ an authored film for BBC Three, due to be aired this spring. Currently one of the nation’s hottest stars, Alesha will undertake a personal journey in the programme to explore what it means to be beautiful in Britain today.

Alesha’s interest in the subject has been fuelled by an apparent contradiction โ€“ she’s heard men talk about fancying all kinds of women, yet every time she goes to the supermarket, she comes across rows of lads’ magazines with covers all displaying the same air-brushed, identikit babes. Do men love women just as they are or should girl-kind be aspiring to look like the airbrushed lovelies in lads’ mags? And it seems that women’s magazines are no exception. Having been the subject of photoshopped magazine covers herself, Alesha is increasingly concerned about the huge pressure younger girls are under to conform to an ideal body type, especially as the female images in the magazines they buy are also being “Photoshopped”.

Alesha says: “I look forward to investigating and challenging our perception of female beauty in 21st century Britain. The image of the female form is becoming increasingly divorced from reality, and I want to make people aware of the pressure society is subjecting us girls to.”

With air-brushing, digital retouching and enhancing firmly in the public’s consciousness, the film explores whether the photos in these magazines are a celebration of the female form or damaging to women’s opinions of themselves. Danny Cohen, Controller of BBC Three, says: “It’s great to have Alesha on BBC Three. This is a subject she feels strongly about and I’m sure she will make a passionate and thought-provoking documentary.”

Humorous, compelling and insightful, the programme will also see Alesha catch-up with celebrity friends who have been on the receiving end of digital surgery. Alesha’s 1 x 60-minute documentary has been commissioned from Firecracker Films by BBC executive producer Maxine Watson. Maxine Watson says: “I’m really excited that Alesha is making this film โ€“ she is bright, fresh, exciting talent, perfect for BBC Three.”
