Strictly Come Dancing judge Alesha Dixon is drawing on her own experience of domestic violence in an upcoming BBC1 documentary ‘Don’t Hit My Mum’. Between the ages of eight and 10, Alesha watch her mother suffer domestic violence, and she wants to encourage others to speak out.
In Don’t Hit My Mum, Alesha explores a crime that 75,000 children a year witness and she goes in search of answers by talking to victims and experts examining the emotional and physical implications of encountering domestic violence. Alesha told Blues & Soul magazine: “…while I think being in music is wonderful, there does come a point where you want to do things for other people and where it’s not all about you. You know, by doing these documentaries… It does give me an outlet to another area that’s not about me, not about music, but is about worthy things that are really important in life.”
Alesha Dixon: Don’t Hit My Mum has been produced by Flame TV, which produced Dixon’s previous documentary Who’s Your Daddy. The hour-long film follows the singer as she talks to victims and experts about the effects of domestic violence on children. She joins a patrol team from Avon and Somerset Constabulary who deal with domestic violence on a daily basis, and meets a charity working with neuroscientists to understand why some abused children can go on to abuse themselves. She also meets a father who has abused his wife in front of their children.
Producer/director is Christina Nutter and executive producers are Barbara Altounyan (Flame) and Maxine Watson (BBC).
Alesha has never talked about the domestic violence she witnessed, but her testimony and the story of many others will be revealed in Don’t Hit My Mum, screening on BBC1 on Monday 15th November.
